How to Use an Interval Timer for HIIT & Fitness
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) alternates short bursts of all-out effort with brief recovery periods. Using a dedicated interval timer with audio cues lets you focus 100% on your form, reps, and breathing without constantly checking a watch.
Popular Interval Workout Formats
- Tabata Protocol (20s Work / 10s Rest × 8 Rounds): Developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata, this 4-minute high-intensity protocol improves both aerobic and anaerobic capacity.
- 45/15 Circuit Training: 45 seconds of work followed by 15 seconds to transition to the next station across 10 rounds.
- EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute): Complete a target number of reps within 60 seconds and rest for the remainder of the minute.
- Boxing / MMA Rounds (3m Work / 1m Rest): Standard 3-minute combat sports rounds with a 60-second corner recovery.
